Mr.
Justice S. Ahmad Sarwana
Born in Dehli and educated in Lahore
(Government College, Lahore) and Karachi (Sindh Muslim
College) passed his B.A. (1961) and LL.B. (1963) from
the University of Karachi. Thereafter, obtained his
LL.M. Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in
1967; the Subject of his Thesis being “Principles
of Boundary Making in International Law”. Awarded
French Government Scholarship to study International
Law in France in 1962, Yale Law School Fellowship in
1964 (Attended Summer School only) and University of
Pennsylvania Law School Graduate Fellowship 1964-65.
He was also selected as US Fulbright Scholar 1964 to
1967. Attended Hague Academy of International Law External
Seminar in Tehran on “Oil & Gas Law and Foreign
Investment) in October 1970 and the Salzburg Seminar
on “American Law & Legal Institutions”
in July 1989 which was taught by Mr. Justice H. Blackman
of U.S. Supreme Court, Ms. Patricia F. Wald, Chief Judge,
US Supreme Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit and Prof. J. Vorenberg, Dean, Harvard Law School.
While in the US worked as an Intern with the United
Nations Legal Department, New York in August and September
1965, as Research Assistant with American Law Institute
from November 1965 to February 1966 and as a Research
Associate with Morgan Lewis & Bockius, Philadelphia
from March 1966 to June 1967.
Admitted to practice as a Pleader by the High Court
of West Pakistan, Karachi Bench 1963; Enrolled as an
Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1973 and
granted the status of a Senior Advocate in 1994.
Elected Member of Executive Committee (1974 to 75),
Joint Secretary (1977 to 78). Honorary Secretary (1979-80)
and Vice President (1986 to 1987) of the Sindh High
Court Bar Association, Karachi and Vice President of
the Supreme Court Bar Association (1993-95). Also elected
Chairman, Pakistan Intellectual Property Rights Association
1979 to 1997.
As adjunct faculty member taught International Law,
Law of Contract, Sale of Goods, Partnership, Torts,
Muslim Jurisprudence and Muslim Personal Law, among
others, at Islamia Law College, (October 1968 to October
1975) and at SM Law College (March 1982 to October 1997).
Worked as Acting Principal, Islamia Law College May
to October 1975. Also taught International Law as a
Visiting Professor at the Department of International
Relations, University of Karachi (October 1978 to January
1979). Member of the Faculty at the Intellectual Property
Law Seminar, Colombo, organized by World Intellectual
Property Organization, Geneva in July 1991.
Contributed the Chapter on “Commercial Laws of
Pakistan” and “Patent & Trade Mark Laws
of Pakistan” in the Digest of Commercial Laws
of the World, published by Oceana Publications New York,
and a Chapter on Pakistan Law on Arresting of Ships,
published by Lloyds of London Press, London. Authored
the Chapter relating to Pakistan Law in the Software
Program on “Expert System – Interactive
Software for International Contracts ” prepared
by Hale & Dorr, Boston, U.S.A. Correspondent for
Pakistan – “Butterworth’s Journal
of International Banking & Financial Law”
published by Butterworth, London. Contributor to: Brook’s
notary, 10th Edition, Sweet & Maxwell, London and

Practiced at the bar for 34 years before the High Court
and the Supreme Court in Constitutional and Civil matters
relating to Admiralty, Banking, Insurance, Shipping,
Foreign Investment, Labour, Patent & Trade Marks,
Tax and Social Security Laws.
Elevated to the Bench of High Court of Sindh on 28.10.1997.
Appointed Member, Rule Committee, High Court of Sindh
on 26 May 1996 and President on 21 February 2000; Member,
Steering Committee, Access to Justice Program for the
Province of Sindh; Chairman I.T. Committee 2 July 2002.
Associated as Member, Executive Committee, College of
Business Management since 13.6.1998 and Chairman, Board
of Governors, Institute of Business Administration,
